Wizz Air CEO Warns Ryanair’s O’Leary to ‘Think Twice’ as Rivalry Escalates

Europe’s low-cost airline rivalries can resemble a soap opera, with familiar characters and recurring insults. But beneath the theatrics lies a very real battle for market dominance and relevance.

A war of words between the CEOs of Ryanair and Wizz Air has escalated, after Wizz chief József Váradi publicly pushed back against repeated claims about the carrier’s long-term prospects.

The dispute between the heads of two of Europe’s largest low-cost carriers has been rumbling for months: “I think it’s inevitable that at some point [Wizz] will either fail or be acquired by someone,” Ryanair Group CEO Michael O'Leary told Corriere della Sera last September. 

Váradi rejected those comments this week in an interview with Hungarian business outlet G7.

“I think we've gone bankrupt at least 10 times according to him. Look at our figures: We have two billion euros in cash, which is higher than Ryanair's liquidity ratio. I don't know what he's talking about,
