Northeast India’s Hotel Market Awakens After Years on the Sidelines

Even after the doubling of hotel supply by 2030, Northeast India will still remain underserved, as this will be less than 3% of India’s total branded hotel supply.
The number of branded hotel rooms in Northeast India is expected to double by 2030, according to new data from hospitality consultancy HVS Anarock.
As of June 2025, the eight Northeastern states of Assam, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Tripura, Meghalaya, Manipur and Nagaland collectively host around 3,450 branded hotel rooms, just 1.7% of India’s total supply. Sikkim and Assam dominate the region’s inventory, accounting for nearly 68% of existing rooms, with Gangtok and Guwahati alone representing more than half.
That balance is shifting fast. More than 3,000 additional branded rooms are in the pipeline across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Tripura, and Nagaland.
