3 Top Quotes About Reinventing Digital Media from Lonely Planet's CEO

Daniel Houghton, CEO of Lonely Planet, spoke today at the Skift Global Forum.

Houghton leads a Lonely Planet global team that has offices in the U.S., Australia, the UK, India and China. Lonely Planet is the world’s largest travel publisher.

Houghton broke the news while on stage that Lonely Planet will begin publishing a consumer travel magazine in the U.S. beginning in early 2015. Details are yet to be finalized, but it will involve LP staff in London assisting a New York-based team with editorial and production. It will also pull from the experience of the Budget Travel team, which LP acquired earlier this year.

Houghton spoke with Skift co-founder Jason Clampet about the complexities of the digital media ecosystem. Here are three things we learned:

  • "For us, we set out to make our print and digital an asset, and knowing how to prioritize all components is a constant struggle."
  • "One of the big things for us is our ability to not just do acquisitions but to invest in hiring as well."
  • "In five years, hopefully we'll have become successful at being a true multimedia company."
