As costs rise and budgets shrink, the meeting and events sector is entering a challenging new phase. According to the American Express Global Business Travel 2026 report, 38% of meeting professionals said costs will be their greatest challenge in 2026. At the same time, 85% of planners said they feel optimistic about the industry’s future.
For that optimism to win out, planners increasingly look for sustainability data, reliable local infrastructure, and clear financial terms before committing to a particular host city. Abu Dhabi is leading the pack amid that growing demand for destinations that balance premium facilities with responsible practices.
Building Awareness in Global MICE Markets
As Abu Dhabi increases its profile as an attractive global tourism destination, it is also establishing itself as a reliable host for world-class meetings and events. The combination of modern venues and facilities, strong government support, and a rich cultural and historical background gives the emirate a distinct value proposition.
However, persistent misconceptions about the city have limited Abu Dhabi’s visibility among global event planners. To identify opportunities for growth, the Abu Dhabi Convention and Exhibition Bureau (ADCEB) recently conducted a global survey to explore how the city is viewed within the international business events community.
The survey examined Abu Dhabi’s perception in key international markets, including India, China, Central Asia, Europe, and Southeast Asia. The findings showed that Abu Dhabi has the foundational strengths to become a leading Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) destination thanks to its modern venues, government support, quality hospitality, and rich cultural experiences. Direct air access proved to be a major consideration for planners from these regions.
“Increasing direct flights from major international hubs will improve Abu Dhabi’s accessibility, making it more competitive with Dubai and other global MICE destinations,” said Mubarak Al Shamsi, director of ADCEB.
Highlighting Local Culture and Entertainment Opportunities
As a result of the survey, ADCEB has developed marketing collateral to help business event organizers integrate curated cultural experiences into their programs. These range from gala dinners hosted in unique venues across Abu Dhabi, where delegates can experience a diverse selection of authentic Emirati cuisine and cultural culinary traditions to desert excursions with falconry demonstrations and visits to historical sites. Organizers can promote a large range of leisure options to delegates through initiatives such as the Abu Dhabi Pass, a digital pass that offers discounted access to the emirate’s major cultural sites, attractions, and activities.
Another aspect of ADCEB’s strategy ties Abu Dhabi’s benefits as a host city to its rapid growth in key industries. Strong government investment in developing sectors like energy, healthcare, and technology has inspired ADCEB to focus on attracting business events specifically in these fields. Differentiating the emirate as a prime location for specialized conferences and trade shows builds on the city’s momentum as a thriving business hub supported by high-tech infrastructure.
“Abu Dhabi’s smart city innovations and infrastructure position it as a tech-focused business events destination,” Al Shamsi said.
As it succeeds in making Abu Dhabi more accessible internationally, ADCEB is also enhancing the city’s nightlife and entertainment options, so that incentive travelers from around the world can find all the activities they expect while making the most of their business trips.
Advancing The Future And Making History
Abu Dhabi has long been developing its reputation as a destination that offers quality and luxury, making it perfect for high-profile international events. Venues like the ADNEC Centre demonstrate how the city brings premium hospitality, modern development, and authentic cultural immersion together under one roof.
Recent investment in modern event technologies that go above and beyond — such as holographic presentations, virtual reality experiences, and AI-driven networking apps — improves attendee engagement and fosters connection among delegates. Not only does this differentiate Abu Dhabi from other MICE destinations, it also firmly establishes the city as one of the most innovative and advanced options in the world, particularly regarding sustainability.
For example, hosting the 63rd ICCA Congress in 2024 was a major milestone for the emirate. It was the first global event to achieve the Zero Food Waste to Landfill Event Standard certification through The PLEDGE on Food Waste. Realizing this sustainability goal provides a blueprint for large-scale global events in Abu Dhabi and around the world.
The Congress also demonstrated Abu Dhabi’s and ICAA’s shared commitment to nurturing future generations of the business events industry. Over 100 international and regional university students were invited to attend, unlocking in-depth learning from industry leaders and sharing a roadmap to growing their careers long term.
“The decision to hold prestigious events in Abu Dhabi underscores the city’s rising prominence and ability to meet the global business events industry demands,” Al Shamsi said.
Increasing Accessibility With Planner Incentives and Financial Support
As interest in the region grows, ADCEB is focused on increasing accessibility through its avenues. In 2023, key stakeholders from across the business travel landscape contributed to a slate of accessibility and inclusion guidelines designed to make meetings and conventions in Abu Dhabi more welcoming to all delegates. Adoption of these guidelines has progressed steadily over time, and ADCEB plans to make them mandatory for all events in the future.
Abu Dhabi is also offering incentives for business-focused travelers and group travel planners. ADCEB offers planners advisory support every step of the way, including easy licensing procedures and streamlined supplier relationships, introductions to relevant government, academic, and cultural partners, and execution-focused event management resources.
Budget-friendly group travel options and financial programs open the doors even further while keeping costs to a minimum. For example, the Advantage Abu Dhabi program provides financial support for business events that are aligned with the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030. ADCEB also organizes a task force of government and private sector entities, offering major events city-wide support through public and private partnerships. In the coming years, increased investment in infrastructure, technology, and human capital will further position the city as an industry vanguard.
“Our ambition is to be a beacon in the industry, ensure the sector is progressive and attractive, and balance culture and technology to preserve our authenticity,” Al Shamsi said.
