Millions of passengers fly every day. Millions upon millions more will fly in the coming decades. All of them are active consumers. When you run the numbers, that’s a very attractive market for advertisers. If they get the mix right, and we get free Wi-Fi out of it, we may not even mind being sold to when we fly.

How will the low-cost carrier price the new service?

Until it begins working according to the standards many expect, perhaps it would be best for airlines to price the future accordingly.

This infrastructure is supported by demand for many applications beyond aviation, but the business benefits of connected aircraft build a compelling case for airlines.

Seamless access is helpful but it's the secure connection, where available, that offers the greatest advantage.

Before Gogo's Smagley spoke, Global Eagle Entertainment's Kevin Trosian mentioned that "the airline industry is very much a relationship industry." Gogo seems to be having some problems with its Airbus relationship.

Airlines such as Delta and JetBlue are finding ways to offer free Wi-Fi products to their customers and that could become the norm as in-flight Wi-Fi becomes pervasive.

Quality of Wi-Fi is becoming as big a conversation as cost, especially for branded hotels catering to business travelers and the group market. We can't reiterate enough, though, that free is what consumers expect.
