The world won't be able to breathe much easier with this UN climate deal covering aviation -- international only, not domestic flights. Enabling airlines to buy credits or carbon offsets instead of taking bold steps to reduce emissions isn't enough given the global warming crisis. We don't know how much the proposed UN deal on airline emissions would actually improve the environment but it is great that so many countries are sitting in a room in Montreal trying to work things out. We do know that the deal would be a landmark one for several reasons: It is the first climate deal to tackle a single sector -- aviation -- and it closes a loophole in the broader Paris climate accord, which didn't target emissions from international flights.
