Amtrak had been on track to notch its first operating profit in its 50 years. But the not-so-novel-anymore coronavirus has dashed the hopes of the U.S. national passenger rail system. President-elect Joe Biden is a fan of Amtrak but might have limited options to ride to the rescue.

Amtrak wanted to break even this year on an operating basis. That was a nice goal, but it was all academic. Amtrak is the U.S. national railway, and the government will do what it must to keep it running.

Understandably, CEO Clare Gilmartin didn't want to play up moves into other travel areas too much at such an early stage, but we'll be keeping a close eye on how the company evolves over the next few years as it looks to diversify away from rail tickets and make more money in other areas.

If search for travel looking for door-to door trip options was a massive potential market, then Expedia, Booking Holdings, Ctrip, or Google would have already snapped up these companies, which have been laboring around that premise for years. This stuff is hard to execute, as the relatively modest exit seems to show.

With consumers much more aware of the damaging environmental impact of air travel, other forms of transport are having a moment. It might be a good time for Trainline's private equity owners to sell up.
