United CEO Says Engine Shortages Will Be ‘Biggest Constraint’ in Near Future

United CEO Scott Kirby is sounding the alarm on engine shortages and exclusivity agreements as the carrier is embroiled in a dispute with Rolls Royce.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby had some choice words for Boeing and Airbus about building aircraft that rely on a single engine type.

“The point that I've made to Boeing and Airbus: Don't ever, ever, ever, ever again build an airplane with only one engine option, you have to have competition in engines,” Kirby said to reporters at the IATA AGM in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.

His comments comes after the carrier had to cancel an order of A350s due to a contract dispute with Rolls Royce.

Kirby added that he sees engine shortages becoming a major issue in the near future.
