Foursquare’s founder: We know if you’re a tourist or a local
Skift Take
The Verge visits a rooftop in Austin, TX with Foursquare founder Dennis Crowley during South by Southwest to discuss the evolution of the check-in and local discovery service.
Speaking of Foursquare’s Radar discovery tool, Crowley touched on what Foursquare can do to differentiate between travelers and locals. “It’s tricky,” Crowley told The Verge. “You have to sniff out someone’s context. You can’t be buzzing them all the time. One thing we’re getting good at is recognizing in this city, in this neighborhood, are you a local or are you tourist? does your phone spend a lot of time in Austin? foursquare understands which neighborhoods you know about. When you go outside of those neighborhoods can dial it up and now we’re going to tell you things more aggressively about this neighborhood.”
