After five years of frozen routes, IndiGo’s return to China signals progress in political and business ties, the real test will be whether travelers follow.
IndiGo operated the first flight from Kolkata to Guangzhou on Sunday night, marking the return of nonstop air connectivity between India and China after 5 years. The service will run daily, using the airline’s Airbus A320 aircraft. The airline said its Delhi-Guangzhou route is scheduled to begin on November 10.
Last week, China Eastern Airlines, also announced that it would resume flights between Shanghai and Delhi from November 9. The route will operate three times a week, on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, using the Airbus A330-200. Tickets are already on sale.
More routes could follow. A source had earlier told Skift that Air India is expected to restart its Delhi-Shanghai flights later this year. If that happens, it would mark a near-complete restoration of pre-pandemic air links between the two countries.
