Airbnb’s Categories Were Meant to Reinvent the Search Box – Now They’re Gone

Category search lost its utility for Airbnb when it expanded beyond one product, homes. It was telling that none of Airbnb's online travel agency multi-product rivals implemented their own version of Category search, which Airbnb touted as being so innovative.

When Airbnb relaunched Experiences and introduced Services, it killed off Category search — the feature it had once hailed as its biggest change in a decade.

Launched in 2022 with 56 home types from A-frames and Castles to Lakefronts and Windmills, Categories was meant to inspire dream trips while rivals focused on simply converting visitors into bookers.
