The D.C. taxi lobby's effort to force Uber to charge five time the taxi rate makes for the first time the car service startup's rates have looked inexpensive.

Uber won a major victory in Washington, DC this week, when the City Council passed an amendment that effectively legalizes the company’s car-booking app… The DC City Council had been deliberating over legislation that would have mandated that these sedans charge no less than five times the minimum cost of a taxi.
