Allegiant is way more than an airline or a clone of fee-hungry Spirit. It's a diversified travel company, hawking hotels, car rentals and other ground transportation services as it profitability taps into travelers desire to escape.

Spirit never hides its fees -- customers know they have to pay for everything -- so why not ditch the toll-free line too. In a world where mobile minutes are more important than area codes it makes little difference.

Spirit is certainly the first one to think about starting differential pricing for airline baggage and other fee, but it will likely spread like wildfire across rest of the industry too.
Superstorm Sandy and growing pains impacted Spirit's bottom line during the fourth quarter. However, whether you like the airline's business model or not from a consumer perspective, it is proving to be successful.

Disgruntled employee or a legitimate issue? An FAA probe in early 2012 couldn't find evidence that Spirit Airlines falsified maintenance records. We'll see.
