Bring it on, 2014.

We like it when these people make headlines.

Blackstone will be hard-pressed to repeat its impressive travel-IPO performance in 2014, although La Quinta is on tap. Hotels and attractions, and not tech, were the sexiest things going in 2013.

This year's list of 100 top meeting hotels revealed a slight shift away from major hotel brands and traditional conventional cities, mirroring a larger trend towards independent hotels and emerging destinations in the hospitality industry.

Blackstone didn't come in and suck the life out of Hilton Worldwide, but turned it into an organization that other hotel chains emulate. With its IPO imminent, Hilton will pay down a bunch of debt, and will find itself in an even more advantageous position.

The rankings are a pleasant reminder that price doesn't buy favor, but price can definitely put you on the bottom. Just ask Ryanair.

Luxury brands across all sectors are entering the Middle East to tap into the local and visitor base of high-spending customers. Their online presence is as, if not more, important than their on-the-ground services.
