Singapore’s new passenger levy sends a message to the aviation world: Sustainable fuels are no longer optional. But can a tax alone jumpstart a struggling green fuel market?

Singapore will become the world’s first country to tax air travelers for sustainable jet fuel, a move that could ripple across the global aviation industry.

Starting October 1, 2026, travelers will face charges ranging from $0.77 for economy passengers flying within Southeast Asia to $32 for business and first-class passengers heading to the Americas. 

The announcement comes as countries gather at the COP30 climate meeting in Brazil to negotiate new measures to combat climate change.

The levy applies to each passenger for tickets sold on or after April 1, 2026 for flights departing Singapore from October 1.

The funds will go toward centralized purchases
