This Week in Travel Startup Funding: Atlas Obscura, LoungeBuddy and More


Each week we will create a roundup of travel startups that have received or announced funding that week. The total amount raised this week was just shy of $6 million.

Here are three companies that announced they raised funding this week, listing in order of highest amount raised. See previous roundups here.

>> LoungeBuddy raised $3 million in its second round of fundraising from Founder’s Fund and individual investors Stephen Mendel and Robert Cohen. LoungeBuddy has raised a total $4 million.

LoungeBuddy, which was founded in 2013, gives travelers short-term access to airport lounges. Users can find and book an airport lounge through the LoungeBuddy app or Concur.

>> Atlas Obscura raised $2 million in its first significant round of outside funding. The diverse group of investors includes media companies such as The New York Times Company, the Graham Holding Company, and BDMI; funds such as New Atlantic Ventures and Treemark Capital; and angels such as Kevin Ryan, founder of Doubleclick and Gilt; Alexis Ohanian, founder ofReddit; John Battelle, founder of Federated Media; and Henry Blodget, founder of Business Insider.

Atlas Obscura is a digital media that creates content around themes of wonder and discovery. The majority of content is contributed by readers, but the site is currently expanding its professional written and video pieces. Atlas Obscura also hosts creative events around the U.S.

>> Trip38 raised approximately $971,400 from InterGlobe Technology Quotient, a strategic business unit of InterGlobe Enterprises, and Singapore-based venture capital firm Lantern Capital.

Trip38 is a Bangalore-based travel management app that provides users’ itineraries and day of travel information as well ass location-aware tips for restaurants, attractions and events.
