When a crisis hits, people crave comfort and stability. But for those caught in the Middle East conflict, with over 55% of flights canceled, a fare home came with a hefty price tag.
Airlines have been charging people stranded in the Middle East up to 20x a normal fare to get out of the Gulf amid the Iran war.
Passengers tell Skift they have been at the mercy of airlines and feel exploited as a result of the increases.
The conflict with Iran has resulted in vast swathes of airspace being closed off and a huge disruption to passengers travelling in and out of the UAE, one of the world's busiest aviation corridors.
Flights have been either restricted, rerouted or canceled altogether. Of the 92,000 flights that had been scheduled in and out of the Middle East between February 28 and March 12, over 49,000 were canceled, according to Cirium.
Just as the supply of flights was shrinking, there was an increase in demand from travelers seeking to get away from the area. Prices soon soared.
