Air India Scouts for New CEO: Reports

Skift Take

Air India’s next chief won’t be fixing an airline that’s broken, the CEO will be steadying one that’s fragile in quieter ways. This is now about execution. And for Tatas, the hire could speed up India’s aviation rise, or turn it into a longer, far more expensive journey.

Parent company of Air India, Tata Sons is reportedly in talks with chief executives of at least two major airlines based in the UK and the US to potentially succeed Air India CEO Campbell Wilson.

Wilson’s contract runs until June 2027, but people familiar with the discussions told Reuters and Economic Times that a transition could come well before that.

Sources cited in the reports said N Chandrasekaran, who is both chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, has taken a distinctly hands-on role, personally engaging with potential successors from global carriers. Air India’s low-cost subsidiary, Air India Express, could also see leadership changes, suggesting a broader reset across the group.

Skift has reached out to both Tata Sons and Air India for comments.

In April last year, Nipun Aggarwal, chief commercial officer of Air India, replaced Wilson as the chairman of Air India Express.
