American Airlines maps award flights so travelers can visualize redemptions

Skift Take

We might black out at the possibility, but we're in favor of almost anything that makes actually booking an award flight a reality.

If you thought Apple Maps on iOS had navigation problems, try plotting a strategy for booking a flight with your frequent flyer miles.

But, American Airlines made it easier for AAdvantage members to find and book flights using their miles by making the options searchable on a Bing map.

The new tool, Award Map, enables program members to insert their origin airports, dates of travel, and the number of miles they seek to use, and then view all of the possible flights by regions of the world.

Want to fly from New York to Roswell, New Mexico, March 26-April 2? That will cost you 37,500 miles. Select the "Book Now" link, and then you can view the numerous possible flights, and book them with your AAdvantage miles.

An airline spokesperson says members of its ADEPT college recruit program "developed the Award Map tool from inception to implementation."

The Award Map tool uses ITA Software's reward shopping tool as its foundation.
