Don't hate American Airlines if it unbundles fares on some transatlantic routes. By flying discounters like Wow Air and Norwegian, travelers have shown how much they like cheap no-frills airlines. American needs to give the people what they want — $99 one-way fares to Barcelona.

Norwegian wins lots of awards, and they're well-deserved. But investors aren't sure the carrier will produce major profits any time soon. The problem? It may be growing too quickly.

Although Gatwick is strategically important for Norwegian, its multiple subsidiaries' model means that it should be largely immune, and might even benefit, if the pound continues to struggle.

This is probably a good business decision. Economy class fares from Asia to the United States and Europe are already low, because there's so much competition. The market probably doesn't need another entrant — at least for now. And who knows? Air Asia X might change its strategy at some point.

To the average flyer this makes little sense. Why would a Scandinavian airline build a new airline with the same name in Ireland? But many consumers expect to pay 30 or 35 Euros to fly from Copenhagen to London. If an airline is going to offer those prices, it needs to control costs.

Some legacy airlines are threatened by Norwegian, but most respect what CEO Bjorn Kjos is doing. They often say he's a worthy adversary.
