As airlines worldwide introduce connectivity and ease device usage rules, the competition among service providers including Gogo, Panasonic, ViaSat, and Row 44 will intensify.

Many years in, location check-in services still haven't proved they're needed by the vast majority of smartphone users, and minor tweaks like these still don't address the reluctance many people have over sharing their location.

With just 6.2% of travelers on Gogo-equipped flights using Wi-Fi you can see that the industry is headed toward free Wi-Fi on flights, assuming the systems can handle the bandwidth.

In-flight Wi-Fi companies are optimistic about their progress and potential, despite low use so far due to high prices and "battery anxiety."

Gogo is a high profile business with a small footprint for now, and if the new FAA regulations get relaxed, it will have a better chance. But its prices have to come down if it wants wider adoption....

Gogo has little competition and a high price point, but has failed to make money. However, a successful IPO and recent FCC ruling position the Internet provider to build faster satellite-based Wi-Fi for international flights moving forward.
