China'a airlines, by the end of 2020, were flying almost as much as they did in 2019, thanks to the country's strong domestic travel rebound. They expected the same last year, but 2021 was dismal, due to internal travel restrictions stemming from China's strict pandemic policies and frequent lockdowns.

Until recently, Cathay Pacific was the only carrier that American Airlines frequent flyers could use to travel into China with frequent flyer benefits. A new partnership with China Southern will extend that reach significantly.

American's loyalty members may no longer have to worry about the mixed messages coming from China Southern and its plans to join the Oneworld Alliance. With a new partnership, frequent flyers on both carriers will now be able to reap benefits — with or without China Southern playing a role in Oneworld.
There's much to expect from Oneworld in its 20th year of service, but partners joining with Connect status may be the most interesting development to watch for.
