The China rebound won’t reward destinations that advertise the loudest. It will reward those that make travel easiest, be it with visas, payments or logistics. Clarity will now sell more than landmarks.
China's outbound tourism is back, and it's bigger than before. A new forecast from China Trading Desk, shared with Skift, forecasts 175 million outbound trips in 2026 and $280 billion in total overseas spend. That’s up from roughly 167.5 million trips and $254 billion in 2025.
The forecast pegs accommodation at $85 billion of the total 2026 outbound spend, the single largest “controllable” pool for many long-haul and premium trips. This means hotels are the biggest category of traveler spending that destinations and tourism businesses can directly influence.
This is important as unlike air capacity or some ground services, hotels can change packaging, pricing, and the booking experience to directly influence length-of-stay and spend per guest.
