Southwest took a big bet when it decided to rip up its unique business model. Now, it seems like that gamble is starting to pay off.

Southwest Airlines said Wednesday that travel demand improved starting in July and it expects that momentum to stay through the end of the year. 

The carrier reported operating revenue of $6.9 billion, a third-quarter record for Southwest, and a profit of $54 million.
