Flying vs. Recycling: Travelers Get Climate Math Wrong

Until the aviation industry accelerates progress in zero-emission aircraft, passengers will remain stuck with a false choice: fly and pollute, or stay home.

Skipping a long-haul flight does more to reduce emissions than other choices, such as recycling. But most people don’t realize it.

That’s one of the takeaways from a new paper from an NYU researcher that included a survey of nearly 4,000 U.S. adults.

Participants ranked different actions by their impact on emissions.

The results: Many participants overestimated the impact things like recycling has on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, they underestimated high-emission actions such as avoiding long-haul flights.
