Skift Take

The Iberia woes are symptomatic of Spain's larger woes, and Barajas will mirror whatever happens to Iberia.

Iberia represents the Big Spanish company, in capitals...Iberia is in urgent need of thinning down so as to become profitable. So many years depending on a State-owned monopoly has spawned a colossus ridden with inefficiencies.

A bleak future awaits to Madrid-Barajas airport if Iberia is thinned down. It will no longer be a hub, a communications nexus through which passes most of the Spanish air traffic...Barcelona has raised it from scratch, with no State support, without flagship airlines and with some regional cabinets more concerned with flashy pictures than with whom appeared in them. The fate of Iberia is then tied to Madrid-Barajas's fate, and vice versa.
