A sharp decline in passenger traffic out of Reagan National at the end of last year is partly why American saw a bigger impact from the government shutdown.

American Airlines took a much bigger bruising from last year's 43-day-long government shutdown than rivals Delta and United.

The government shutdown impacted American’s revenue by around $325 million. Delta took a $200 million hit and United saw a $250 million impact.

“The government shutdown hit us, it hit us harder than others,” American CEO Robert Isom said on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” Tuesday morning. “The good news on that is that as soon as the government shutdown got over, we’ve seen bookings return.”
