Soil Carbon Credits: Farms Are Selling Emissions Reductions to Travel Companies

Farms would ideally adopt regenerative practices. But with transition costs high, carbon credits may help bridge the gap.

Radisson, Ryanair, and Enterprise are buying carbon credits, not from forests, but from farms.

In a recent carbon credit issuance from the agri-tech company Agreena, those travel companies purchased credits generated by regenerative farming practices across 10 European countries, including a family farm in England.

Radisson used the credits to offset remaining emissions after refurbishing two hotels to run on heat pumps and renewable electricity. 

It now claims the properties operate with “Verified Net Zero” status. 

Enterprise, meanwhile, offers customers a farm-based offset option in a program expected to avoid 10.8 million tonnes of emissions over 20 years.
