United to Trim Late Summer Capacity, Targets a Double in Loyalty Profits

United is rethinking third quarter capacity as peak travel demand continues to split between the early summer months and the end of the year.

United Airlines is considering ending next year’s summer schedule a week early and operating 15% fewer redeye flights as demand for the season flattened during the third quarter. 

Andrew Nocella, United’s chief commercial officer, said during a call with analysts to discuss quarterly results that the carrier had noticed a widening gap of revenue per available seat mile between the second and third quarters of the year. 

Nocella said the issue appears to be industry wide. Delta Air Lines, which reported earnings on October 9, also said that it had also noticed a similar trend in late summer bookings.
