It’s been a weak summer for international travel. A government shutdown could add more bottlenecks to inbound tourism's recovery.

The government shutdown shouldn’t make much of a difference to visa applications – as long as it doesn’t drag out.  

While consular operations are funded by visa and passport fees and will likely see “no noticeable impact” in the near term, a longer shutdown could eventually drive up wait times, according to James Hollis, an immigration attorney and partner at McEntee Law Group.

That could lead to bottlenecks for international tourists working to secure visas in time for major events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
