Data roaming charges are the scourge of global travel. Being able to access city maps offline isn't the end-all and be-all, but it's better than nothing.
TripAdvisor just tweaked its Hotels, Flights and Restaurants apps to enable users to download maps and reviews when they have a data connection and then to view them offline to avoid roaming charges.
This is similar to the workings of TripAdvisor’s City Guides, which are also viewable offline.
“To access the new offline feature, TripAdvisor app users may search for a city within the app when a data connection is available and tap a button to download city content,” TripAdvisor states. “Once downloaded, the app will automatically transition between the offline mode featuring 10 reviews per point of interest when no data connection is available, and the full live version of the app when it is cellular or WiFi-connected.”
The feature includes more than 300 city maps, and they can be added or removed depending on travelers’ meanderings.
