There's been a lot of press about airports becoming destinations in themselves. But, what about airlines? If Air China's Beijing Duck in first class is as good as the airline promises, and flight attendants can deliver, then the carrier is becoming a way for the passengers up front to experience Chinese culture, as well. Of course, economy passengers will have to settle for rice, noodles and burgers from a bevy of catering companies.

Bring it on, 2014.

Blackstone will be hard-pressed to repeat its impressive travel-IPO performance in 2014, although La Quinta is on tap. Hotels and attractions, and not tech, were the sexiest things going in 2013.

City boat tours are usually deemed uncouth tourist activities, but these short trips are an important element of NYC's vast transit infrastructure. The inspiring skyline view is just an added benefit.

Airbnb clearly was on weak ground against HomeAway in this trademark lawsuit, and apparently withdrew the campaign. The gloves are off, however, and the two rivals can expect to see their competition against one another get nastier in coming years.

Hyatt Hotels has the opportunity to bring the all-inclusive resort model into the 21st century but it's going to require a lot of changes.
