In 1998, the coastal road to Dakar’s Senghor airport was unpaved and unlit. You were lucky if your battered yellow taxi had one headlight as it lurched through the red dust, beeping at the hawkers, carts and Dakar Dem Dikk buses that loomed from the darkness with hair-raising suddenness. Besides musician Youssou N’Dour’s mansion, there was nothing notable to be seen on the way but miles of Atlantic Ocean.

Today, it’s hard to imagine that desolate ride.
