Simpler homepages have been a trend over the last few years, and lately hotel-search sites have been catching up. Kayak, Google, and Trivago are among the sites that have streamlined their hotel-search widgets into one line in a bid to get less complicated and distracting.

A year from now, it will be interesting to see how much Priceline and Expedia alter their metasearch advertising in Kayak, TripAdvisor and Trivago.

Kayak has a tough road to displace home-grown Trivago in Germany, but with Priceline's backing and new product twists, Kayak should be able to make things interesting.

This is a great move by Expedia as Trivago is a leader across a wide swath of European countries, and this could make Kayak's quest for European expansion a bit more difficult.

If you haven't heard of Trivago yet, you will. The company is big in Europe, and would have to make some real noise at this relatively late stage to stand out in a crowded U.S. market.
