This kind of branded lounge allows Star Alliance to be a part of the much-anticipated new LAX terminal while keeping operating costs low for airlines. It is a model the alliance plans to use again in airports across Asia.

Heathrow is keen to not have the opening disasters it had with T5, so it will start T2 in phases.

There's a bigger question here about the usefulness of alliances. Emirates and Etihad are getting the full benefits of code-shares and mileage agreements without locking themselves into exclusive agreements, and nobody has accused the carriers of being wrong about anything in recent years.
