If Airbnb will ever succeed in easing New York's stringent short-term rental regulations, a precursor would be the type of hosting-information-sharing pact that it reached with the city. Many short-term rentals offer extra space and control over your living environment. Both attributed highly valued during this time of pandemic. Nothing's decided yet, but some early evidence suggests that short-term rentals might be doing less worse than traditional hotels peers.

The battle between Booking Holdings, Airbnb, and Expedia is not just about which one will emerge with the thickest wad of cash. It is also about business models, revenue stream diversity, and product offerings meshing the best with traveler behavior that may never be the same.

Airbnb opened up the mainstream travelers to a whole new way to travel. That is an achievement no one can take away from them. Even in these bad times, it has a chance to build out its bigger promise here.

Love it or hate it, you can hardly blame Airbnb for a deflated valuation, although not all of the plunge is coronavirus-related. The pain that is infecting travel and other companies at this moment is boundless.
