Network airlines have long sought to drive out low-cost carriers by matching fares in certain markets. But now, equipped with basic economy fares and other options, United Airlines' Kirby vows to match the fares of new entrants in a much more rigorous way.

United President Scott Kirby and Chief Commericial Officer Andrew Nocella, who worked together at US Airways and American Airlines, deserve credit for the airline's turnaround. Then again, when they arrived United was a broken company, so there was probably only one way to go — up.

We told you United would probably turn things around on finances when it hired revenue whiz Scott Kirby back in August 2016. And look what's happening. Now, it's time for the airline to improve its customer service, too.

Not everyone likes Scott Kirby, because he has a habit of speaking his mind, whether his opinions are popular or not. But there's little doubt about his track record. The man knows how to increase an airline's revenue. He's done it at America West, US Airways, American, and now United.

Airlines prefer not to take risks with most of their senior hires, which makes sense, because the industry is more complicated than most.
