Thirteen years is a long time to stay at one corporation. Perhaps JetBlue needs some fresh blood. Or maybe Chief Commericial Officer Marty St. George just wants a change of pace.

JetBlue's not the most profitable U.S. airline. It's not the most on-time. It doesn't have nearly the selection of destinations as its larger competitors. But the airline has succeeded in disrupting the industry with its innovative business class product.

JetBlue's Mint business class should prove to be very popular, and there are enough improvements in the rest of the plane to ensure that the airline's existing customer base won't get alienated. Still, it remains to be seen how long JetBlue will keep Mint at its current price points, and whether the service will be an economic success.

The current mini-arms race offering premium seats is reminiscent of the fervor around all-business class services between New York and London in the early 2000s. Airlines are hoping the outcome will be different this time.
