Vacation rental owners can be a set-in-their-ways bunch. HomeAway's Sharples expects there to be resistance to Airbnb's efforts to break into vacation rentals in a big way. On the other hand, some vacation rental owners aren't happy with the mandate for online bookings, either.

Kayak already displays some vacation rental listings from sister site Booking.com although HomeAway's properties, many from individual owners, would give Kayak users additional choice. HomeAway just celebrated its 10th anniversary. Now there is a big question as to whether it will still be an independent company by the time the 11th anniversary rolls around. The company would be expensive to buy, but the betting here is that someone will acquire it, sooner rather than later.
