For those still loyal to the travel industry, a new spate of partnerships will now make it easier to earn miles and points across airlines, hotels, and shared cars. And with zero barrier to entry, some passengers may find a windfall.

Hilton and Lyft's new loyalty partnership is a win-win for travelers. On one hand, Hilton members get completely free points for riding in Lyfts. On the other, it'll also soon be possible to book rides with extra loyalty points.

But Mark Hoplamazian didn't say Hyatt would never try it out again.

Hilton is focusing on the same things as everyone else in hotels today: loyalty, technology, and marketing. But what about taking on Airbnb directly in homesharing? Don't count on it anytime soon.

The hotel industry is just waking up to the problem of plastic waste, but this is a two-way street. Hotels rely on this convenient, affordable material just as much as travelers do. The real struggle is turning newfound global awareness and municipal legislation into swift action.

Accor as a takeover target? Stranger things have happened. (Anbang, anyone?) No matter what transpires in hospitality going forward, though, it's clear that consolidation is here to stay.

We're pretty sure Hilton chief Chris Nassetta would disagree.

Arguments can be made for a number of sides, but the truth is there's no true winner or loser here, if we're being totally honest.

It makes sense for Hilton to fix its marquee brand by appealing to event planners with upscale lodging and interesting spaces. It will take some time to see how its commitment to pleasing planners really goes.

While most still don't think it's necessarily for them, there are a few who are starting to be open to giving it a try.
