It won't be across-the-board, allowing for variations in this city-pair or that, but you can expect similar pricing dynamics when the American Airlines-US Airways merger goes through. Here again, there aren't a lot of legacy carriers left for additional mergers in the future.

Car rental revenue and daily rates climbed in the U.S. in the first quarter as consolidation, such as Hertz's Dollar Thrifty acquisition, lightened the competitive dynamics.

Expanding in China and partnering with a local, established company seems like a no-brainer for Hertz.

Hertz believes the company has assembled all the big pieces it needs. That includes buying Dollar Thrifty to attack the mid-tier market, and a slew of car-sharing technology acquisitions. Now the company can focus on lubricating the customer experience to make it more fluid.

Both Hertz and Avis Budget now have their little ride-sharing subsdiaries to play with, and both are positioning themselves to tap into the business travel market.

Hertz's copycat actions may be flattering, but they're also a serious challenge to the family-run business. Lucky that they only need to make themselves happy rather than testy shareholders.

Video kiosks at off-airport locations sound great. But, if the Dollar Thrifty car for rental is filthy, is the video kiosk going to wash it?
