Dubai has surged in the luxury hotel race, adding five five-star hotels to its existing seven. The strong showing came as the Middle East beat out other regions in growth of five-star awards.

After four years of London being on top as the five-star hotel capital of the world, they have lost that title to Macau, China. Forbes Travel Guide’s 2023 Star Awards recognized Macau as having 22 five star hotels overall.

While a five-star rating still signals that a property has class, it's not always sufficient in making clear what guests can expect beyond the high-quality service and amenities.

Between its market cap, commitment to sustainability with its LEED program, and its new Innovation Lab, it's no surprise Marriott was a contender for the most innovative hotel chain on the Forbes list. But other hotel chains, such as Hilton Worldwide, which will soon allow guests to control virtually all aspects of their stay using their smartphones, are definitely in the conversation.

Business magazine Forbes is trying to attract business travelers at U.S. airports, hoping they'll buy magazines, luggage and gum. Why not? It could work.

Investing in travel isn't such a gamble after all, except if you're referring to gaming -- which appears to be a sure bet when it comes to wealth creation.

The value of earning extra stars at hotels stands is clear, while those added stars at restaurants from the Michelin team feed the ego more than they feed the team.
