Part of Etihad's timing with this new campaign is due to the attention Emirates will get starting Apr 1 when its big partnership deal with Qantas starts. Other part is Turkish's big $120 million campaign that's ongoing.

One explanation for the Gulf airlines' visibility on sports fields could stem from their absence in alliances, which may have pushed them to find meaningful partnerships outside of aviation. It's interesting to the note that Qatar was the first one to join an alliance, and it currently sponsors only one sports team.

Gulf Air is up against three dynamic and well-funded airlines and going small is unlikely to provide it with the breather it needs to survive.

Etihad doesn't need to own airlines outright and it doesn't necessarily need to join an alliance to give its customers access to a global network when it can simply buy significant stakes in strategically selected carriers.

Etihad's investment amounts to a rescue plan for Air Berlin, and is part of Etihad's plan to foster a multi-carrier frequent flyer program.

The Gulf airlines only have a small chunk of the market in the U.S., but it's become their most rapidly growing source of revenue over the last two years and uncertainties at U.S. carriers are providing opportunities to grow even further.

And now Etihad is looking at Kingfisher, instead of Jet as was reported earlier last month. For now, the turmoil and uncertainty in India skies will continue.

Etihad hasn’t made a statement whether the omissions were intentional or an oversight since Etihad doesn’t fly to Israel.
