Southwest has perennially been a thorn in the side of online travel companies that lusted after getting access to its flights and fares. But no one can credibly argue that Southwest's insistence on direct distribution hasn't worked for the airline. Its competitors and peers inside and outside of the airline industry can only be jealous.

Whether Bing Travel/Farecast could have made it and competed just based on the flight prediction differentiator is open to debate, but Microsoft Bing never even gave it a try.

The deal, particularly the desktop element of it, is a good one for TripAdvisor, even if Microsoft has struggled to become a force in travel.

Microsoft/Bing's approach to content is indeed more open than Google's, and Bing has done a great job incorporating a lot of Yelp restaurant content on Bing.com without having to acquire the company.

How wonderful is it that the tech heavyweights are having an arms race to provide users with the best free maps the world has ever seen?

Bing has reorganized its search results pages to incorporate the social element, but it really has a long way to go before the service evolves into something really useful for travelers.
