Expedia inherited some minority investments in travel startups from HomeAway and Trivago, and made a few of its own in 2015. Look for Expedia to spread its money around in 2016, making additional minority investments, as well as a big acquisition or two.

Alice is Expedia's latest foray into hotel technology as it previously signed a deal with Checkmate. Investing in these platforms can help create better guest experiences at Expedia's partner hotels, which in turn makes for a closer business relationship between Expedia and hotels.

It's another chapter in the convergence of everything: Expedia, the online travel agency, invested in the Alice guest-experience app as Expedia tries to get deeper into providing technology services for hotels. Everyone's doing it -- or will soon.

For hotels that don't have the resources to develop their own apps, the Alice hotel app and concierge service, and others like it, could be a useful solution for making concierge services more mobile-oriented.
