Stranded flyers should look to small regional airports to leave New York

The majority of fliers stuck in New York City this week are awaiting status updates on LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark Airports; however, Long Island MacArthur Airport has been running flights since Wednesday morning. The airport remained open throughout the storm and plans to resume all regular routes Thursday afternoon.

Southwest Airlines resumed flights out of the small regional airport Wednesday morning, and US Airways expects to be resume flights by noon on Thursday.

“Some of the smaller airports may be easier to fly out of,” said a Southwest agent on Wednesday afternoon. “Flights out of JFK Airport aren’t looking good until at least Sunday.”

Westchester County Airport in White Plains, New York is also running regular flights on United, US Airways, Delta, American Airlines, and JetBlue as of Wednesday evening. The airport is located 40 minutes outside of Manhattan by car, but is currently inaccessible on Metro-North.

Tweed New Haven Regional Airport in Connecticut reopened today, although the first two flights were cancelled due to issues with its light and weather system. Flights are expected to continue tomorrow morning.

If travelers are desperate to leave the region, they can contact Teterboro Airport starting Thursday morning where they can charter a private flight. The airport closes at sundown as there is still no operational lighting at night.
