San Diego Airport new "New Media Lounge" to integrate tech & landscape

Skift Take

Airports continues to integrate aspects of the outdoors from window walls’ natural light to seating design to lighten up airports’ stodgy static feel for passengers stuck on layovers and delays.

San Diego International Airport has commissioned Jason Bruges Studio to create a new lounge -- called the New Media Lounge -- for passengers as part of the airport’s major expansion and on-going arts programme.

The floor and furniture of the lounge will be designed to reflect the landscape, terrain, cliffs and coastal areas surrounding the airport, while large lamps hanging from the ceiling will replicate the San Diego airspace, with projections of detailed flight information relevant to each individual passenger. The lounge will also contain a range of interactive elements related to local wildlife and the theme of migration, which will be prevalent in the installation.

Jason Bruges Studio, with architecture firm Gensler, was awarded the project by the San Diego Airport Authority following a global competition.
