Bali's rice terraces receive UNESCO World Heritage status

The title is a nice nod to the Balinese culture and its farming history, which existed long before tourists and resorts overran the small island.

After a 12 year wait, Bali has just received UNESCO World Heritage Status for its unique Subak irrigation system, which creates the stunning emerald green rice terraces that make the west of the island so well known.

The UNESCO status was awarded in recognition of the central role the rice terraces play in preserving Balinese culture as part of an ancient living cultural system still in operation today.
