6 Charts Showing Global Consumers' Satisfaction With Their Leisure Time

Skift Take

While 42% of Americans didn't take a single vacation day last year, they're not all holding pitchforks demanding more leisure time and similar scenarios exist in other countries as well.

Global consumers are fairly split with their satisfaction on the amount of leisure time they have and the amount of dissatisfaction isn't as high as you'd think in places like the U.S.

Given that 42% of Americans say that they didn't take a single day of vacation last year, it's interesting to see that more than half of all age groups in the U.S., and some significantly more than half, said they're either completely or fairly satisfied with the amount of leisure time they have. That's according to a survey from data company GfK which surveyed 27,000 consumers from 22 countries to find out how happy they are with their time away from their work last year.

The following six charts demonstrate that in some of the world's largest economies consumers are more satisfied than they are dissatisfied with the amount of leisure time they have for activities including travel.

Chart 1: Globally, 58% of respondents said they're completely or fairly satisfied with the amount of leisure time they have. Breaking that down shows respondents aged 60 and older are most satisfied with their leisure time.

Chart 2: Older generations in China are slightly more satisfied with their leisure time than younger generations.

Chart 3: The U.S. actually has some of the highest levels of satisfaction for leisure time compared to the countries GfK included in the survey.

Chart 4: Comparitively, Brazil is among the countries where respondents reported feeling the least levels of satisfaction with leisure time, although the lowest percentage of satisfaction, 48% for 40 to 49 year olds, doesn't indicate overwhelming dissatisfaction.

Chart 5: Russia's satisfaction levels are a lot like Brazil's, although Russia respondents said they're slightly more dissatisfied with their amount of leisure time.

Chart 6: Respondents aged 60 and older from the U.K. have the same satisfaction percentages as U.S. respondents from that age group. U.K. respondents aged 50 to 59 also have some of the highest leisure time satisfaction levels compared to all other countries GfK considered.

America's National Parks May Face Summer Worker Shortage

The U.S. National Parks Service hasn't seen staffing increase in tandem with surging visitation at many locations. The Trump's Administration's rescinding of job offers to temporary workers, plus other actions, may compromise the ability of rangers to manage crowds this summer.
