Singapore Airlines Used Apple Watch as a Great Excuse to Rethink All Its Apps

Skift Take

The introduction of the Apple Watch has benefited all digital platforms by inspiring smart companies to re-think the mobile interface. SIA clearly used the opportunity to provide useful functions for its passengers, regardless of what mobile device they rely on when they travel.

Singapore Airlines has completely revamped its mobile app for both iOS and Android smartphones, including a new Apple Watch app, to make mobility as simple as it is attractive.

Travel companies, and airlines, have issued a number of mobile app updates that coincided with the introduction of the Apple Watch, but, with its app, Singapore took the opportunity to completely re-think its mobile apps — and its website, too.

These new mobile apps are just one part of the improvements Singapore plans to make to improve the user experience across its digital customer touchpoints. It has rolled out a beta version of the Singapore Airlines website, and will soon introduce a tablet version of its mobile app which will include new functionalities to fit the possibilities afforded by that platform.

Users on all devices are get a clean and contemporary user interface that includes panoramic photos of destinations on the itinerary, which build up the anticipation of the journey.

Beyond beauty, Singapore Airlines’ mobile app users get practical functionality to reduce travel stress and encourage bookings. Customers will find a widget on the home screen that displays current flight status, and an integrated flight schedule and booking widget which makes arranging a new flight faster and simpler.

Members of the airline’s KrisFlyer loyalty program can also review their membership details, such as miles accrued and tier information.

For the Apple Watch app, the airline has gone beyond providing basic flight status information through a single screen. It has included a Glance View which includes trip reminders, countdowns to a trip, and flight up-dates on the day, such as letting app users know when check-in counters are open.
